Reyes Católicos Recycles

Reyes Católicos primary school continues to participate in the Agenda 2030 sobre el Desarrollo Sostenible, by promoting ways to protect the planet. Concentrating on Objective 15, from the Objectivos de Desarrolo Sostenible (ODS), students in grades 5 and 6 have explored the importance of preservation, life of ecosystems and the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. The students took part in a project called “Reyes Católicos Recycles.” Emerald, Auxiliare de Conversación at the school, created the lessons and project, which were completed in English. After watching a video explaining the three R’s, the classes brainstormed different ways they could use these methods in our own school and lives. Together, they decided to create recycling bins and paint them with natural paints. In addition, To promote the use of natural resources instead of regular toxic paints, students also used the natural paints from vegetables to paint their masks.

  

Natural paints have many environmental and human health advantages. Natural paints are non-toxic, without hazardous smells and emissions. In addition, the paints are biodegradable and compostable because they are made from renewable resources.

In our project, we reused four cardboard boxes for the recycling bins. Emerald made a variety of natural dyes from vegetables and brought them in for each class to paint their masks. Compostable cups were used to hold the paints.  Each class was also designated to paint one recycling bin for the school. While half the students in a class painted, the other half completed two worksheets that focused on the three R’s. These worksheets stimulated their cognitive thinking, as they had to create products that were reused from common materials. For example, creating a planter out of a water bottle or egg carton, and a pencil case holder out of a can.

Students worked together to learn the importance of preserving and recycling for the good of our planet. This project allowed students to implement their creativity and to enjoy their collaboration. Students successfully promoted reusing with the cardboard boxes, recycling, by creating recycling bins, and reducing by using natural paints to eliminate the use of toxins.

El alumnado del tercer ciclo ha elaborado un proyecto que trata sobre los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS). En este caso, nos hemos centrado en el objetivo 15 “Vida de ecosistemas terrestres”.

Para ello, hemos trabajado las 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), que es una propuesta sobre los hábitos de consumo, popularizada por la organización ecologista Greenpeace, que pretende desarrollar hábitos como el consumo responsable.

Con la ayuda de Emerald, quién ha elaborado tinta a través de vegetales y frutas, hemos pintado mascarillas, y también hemos fabricado unos “contenedores” de reciclaje que expondremos en nuestras clases.

Desde el colegio, animamos a todo el mundo a reciclar y reutilizar cualquier objeto, para así ayudar a nuestro planeta.
